Us
2008
oil on canvas
85 x 69cm
A year after the making of Dismembered came the next painting, Us. Again, I used one of the five canvases of the same size which I had brought out from the UK. Again, I used the now familiar process of blanking out the discarded painting and then imagining and working.
As the abstract white atmosphere of the painting evolved, it became clear that there were still several untouched areas that formed the figures of two birds. Apart from the original orange wash I applied in the UK, the only colour I used in this painting was white, so the blue is from the original discarded work. While I was working the title came to me and it became known as Us.
