Echoing Birdman, the image of a shamanic birdman found its way into this painting and infiltrated later paintings of this period.
As with these other paintings, my process was the usual thing: to rework an existing, discarded work, in this case a smallish, abstract, largely blue work that I had found in the stairwell of the building I was living in in Enmore. This work has echoes of Run, which was made eight years earlier, in that a ‘shadow’ appears: in this case the image of the small bird below.
I used only white and a very small amount of red to create the pink in this work. All other colour and texture was provided by the original work.
