I Have Absoluetly No Idea What I’m Doing (sic)
2010
oil on canvas
85 x 68cm
I remember once, quite a while ago, I was working with Redundant Technology, and we had conjured up a new song. As is usual we were all just standing around in a sort of stupor, digesting what had just happened and Simon said to me: ‘What’s it called?’ To which I responded ‘I’ve no idea’. And that became the name of the song.
A similar thing happened when I was working on this painting.
I was once again going through a process of destroying and exhuming, with little thought as to what was going on, and the phrase ‘I have absolutely no idea what I’m doing’ kept coming up in my mind. So that became the name of the painting.
Again, I was using one of the discarded paintings that I had found in the UK, on this occasion I used only white with a small amount of red.
Later the same Simon and I were working on the design for the catalogue for the exhibition Sub which I staged at Hardware Gallery in Enmore in 2011. Despite rigorous proofreading we still managed to miss a typo in the name of this painting in the catalogue, and so from then on, the name of this painting has included that typo.
I have absoluetly no idea what I’m doing (sic)
Again, we have motifs of birds and children.
